Tips to Ensure from Drum to Disc Brake Conversion
Drum brakes are
not just old-fashioned but also quite troublesome because they are not heat
resistant and are easily damaged by heat, mud and debris. They don’t provide
the best stopping power and need regular adjustments. This is where the disc
brakes come to the rescue! A lot of people like to convert their old drum
brakes to disc brakes themselves. So, here are a few important tips to keep in
mind when converting your drum brakes to your all new disc brakes –
1.
Taking off the old drum
brakes can be quiet a task because the bolts can be fused up and rusted. So, ensure
you have an acetylene torch, mechanical penetrating oils and a
sledgehammer/hacksaw to lubricate and smoothly take off these bolts especially
if you have one of those heavier vehicles like jeeps/trucks that need 14 bolt
disc brake systems.
2. Front-brake and
rear-brake assemblies cannot be interchanged and they differ slightly. It is
crucial to know what is required for each type before attempting to convert to
disc brakes.
3. If
you’re looking at purchasing a disc conversion kit or gathering parts from a
junkyard or spare parts store, you need to keep in mind what exactly it is that
you are looking at getting from the conversion. If you are just changing the
old brakes on an old vehicle/jeep, a conversion kit for even a 14 bolt disc brake might
be way too expensive than purchasing separate spare parts instead.
4. Always look good materials
used for the disc brakes based on the functionality of the vehicle that you are
looking at upgrading.
